Two O.C. firms join list of biggest sales tax delinquents

Two Orange County companies have been added to the state’s list of largest sales and use tax delinquents, according to the California State Board of Equalization.money

The board has been posting the 250 largest tax delinquencies since 2007 and updates the list quarterly. This quarter, 19 new names owing a total of $22 million were added. The taxpayers are given 30 days’ notice before their names are added to the list.

The local additions are:

  • Sizzler Restaurant in Foothill Ranch, owned by W & J Investments LLC, owes $547,000, starting Oct. 6, 2008
  • Gemini Associates Inc., Irvine computer peripherals wholesaler, owns $543,000, starting March 8, 2007

Orange County has four companies among the top 11 on the list. Total tax owed for the entire list is $296 million, according to the Board of Equalization.

4. U.S. Car Nation, Santa Ana, owns $5.1 million

5. John Kelly, Irvine, business not stated, owes $5.1 million

7. Fariborz Tavassol Kashani, San Clemente, business not stated, owes $4.6 million

11. Michael Brian Interior Design, Laguna Beach, owes $4.05 million

Since public disclosure of the biggest tax debtors started, 20 taxpayers have settled debts totaling $18 million (Six paid in full and 14 are making installment payments.

    So? Here is part of a story from earlier this year. This is about the largest of the banks that recieved bailout money(paid by tax payers)

    The committee said it could not legally release the names of the companies owing taxes. It said one recipient of bailout money had almost $113 million in unpaid federal income taxes from 2005 and 2006. A second recipient owed almost $102 million dating to before 2004. Another was behind $1.1 million in federal income taxes and $223,000 in federal employment taxes.

    Jan,
    Did you come across any data that would show whether tax delinquencies are getting worse or improving? A graph?

    That would be interesting to see.

    Just a FYI…there is no Sizzler Restaurant in Foothill Ranch. I’m not sure where that came from. The closet Sizzler is in Lake Forest.
