What is it about Orange County hair stylists and cancer?
I don’t mean there’s a causal connection. But the fight against cancer seems to be a favorite charity for local hair

Armando Flores, owner of Armando Salon in Newport Beach, cuts Emily Stoffko's hair during recent cancer fundraiser
salons.
Exhibit 1: Recently the Armando Salon, a Joshua Christopher salon, in Newport Beach and Joshua Christopher Salon in Fullerton raised $7,500 in separate “Cut for the Cure” hair styling events. Proceeds from cuts and other beauty treatments benefited the Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment for St. Joseph Hospital.
“Everybody is touched by cancer and hosting an event like this is a way to give back to the community,” explains Christopher Nunez, who owns both salons. “I am very blessed to have the most wonderful team and am grateful that they donated their time for the cause.”
Exhibit 2: Planet Beauty in Newport Beach is selling $10 flower clips handmade by a cancer survivor and donating $7 to the Komen Orange County Race for the Cure, scheduled for Sept. 27.
For five years Planet Beauty, a 27- store and e-commerce site chain, has been a corporate sponsor of the race. Everyone who visits the salon’s booth the day of the race wearing the flower hair clip will receive a special thank you gift.
“As a committed sponsor of the race year after year, we have a loyal customer base of women who are connected to cancer personally or through loved ones,” says Carol Choi, Planet Beauty’s marketing manager.
Exhibit 3: Tribeca Hair Salon in Aliso Viejo often donates its chairs and services to cut women’s hair that is then donated to programs that make wigs for women undergoing chemotheraphy.
“We’re always willing to help out cancer causes. It’s a no-brainer for us,” says owner Tim Telles.

The Tres Jolie II salon in Mission Viejo is also raising awareness for the prevention of Breast Cancer through and event called “Save the Boobies” this weekend. Proceeds will be donated to Cancer charities.
Thanks for the addition, JF.

There is a book called Dressed to Kill which proves breast cancer is caused by wearing bras. Bras were introduced around 1912-13 and that’s when breast cancer started to appear. The author cured herself by dropping the bra and going on a very healthy diet with lots of juicing.
Hairdressers can also be a big part in finding skin cancer by examining the scalps and ears of their clients. In 1991 my hairdresser found a melanoma on the back of my ear and suggested I have the dermatologist take a look. I got an appointment right away and he confirmed the diagnosis. I am forever in her debt!
