Businesses, taxpayer groups launch anti-tax campaign

June 24th, 2009, 12:00 pm · 10 Comments · posted by Jan Norman, small-business columnist

Small-business owners, major corporations and taxpayer groups have launched a campaign to urge the California tax1legislature and Gov. Schwarzenegger not to raise taxes because of the current state budget crisis.

The group, Californians Against Higher Taxes, has put up a web site, MoreJobsNotTaxes, and is airing radio ads in this market and in Sacramento because the legislature put out its budget-balancing proposal that includes several billion dollars in new taxes, including cutbacks in business deductions for operating losses, taxes on oil companies and cigarettes.

Earlier this year, the Legislature passed $12.6 billion in new taxes.

    Give it up!

  • John S. says:

Tax oil companies and cigarettes and increase business taxes. Gas prices and the cost of other services or products will go up more and smokers will just buy over the internet.
Expect a lot of BS from the unions who seem to have an endless supply of money forcibly extracted from members to try and scare us into accepting them with scorched earth commercials.
    We’re all gonna burn
    We’re all gonna get robbed
    We’re all gonna starve
    We’re all gonna die

I’ve had about enough of this monkey business from those clowns up in Sacramento. Today I read where they plan to do about a half dozen more gimicks to close the deficiet without cutting more……these problems will never end….only dragging it out futher and it only gets worse. Time to move out of this state. Texas here I come!

  • BS says:

This country is following suit with Ca. A democratic Congress/Pres……the welfare state, give to the poor and programs that make the Dems look good and get votes for their bleeding hearts. Dems still want to raise taxes….go figure!

  • Cliff says:

I’m looking to move I just dont know where to go??

  • ocobserver says:

Who in their right mind is going to buy a pack of cigarettes for over $7 a pack? ha. Come on. Smokers are going to smuggle cartons across the state border or make their own. No one is going to pay over $7 bucks! Ain’t going to happen. Therefore, tax revenue on cig will actually go down. They raised our sales tax and since that stupid decision took effect sales tax revenue has dropped. They shot themselves in the foot again. And if they continue to tax us and add preposterous add-on fees productive people will move to neighboring states! All you will have left are politicians, government workers and illegal foreigners. Whatcha goina do then?

    • MisForMoron says:

You bet i will! My brother has already agreed to ship smokes to me from his state. instead of attacking the standard old sin tax targets how about taxing coffee by the cup? More people drink coffee than smoke…NOW theres a cash cow for sure!

    • avrealist says:

So true ocobserver! It’s the same thing that happens when the state decides to increase taxes on businesses and then they lose even that revenue when the businesses move to ANY neighboring state that is more tax friendly. If they offered similar tax incentives to businesses, the state would lose money on each single business, but that would be more than made up by the increase in businesses relocating here. Not to mention the resulting increase in employment which would also increase the state tax base….I don’t get it!
