St. Joseph Health System in Orange has received Gallup’s Great Workplace Award for the third time.

The pollster/consultant’s Workplace and Leadership Consulting division studies 15 million employees in 150 nations each year to compile the list honoring organizations with the most productive and engaged workforces in the world.

The 2009 award honors 23 companies. St. Joseph is one of eight to be a three-time winner.

“We compared millions of work groups we have studied around the world,” said Gallup executive Tom Rath. “The awardees have worked tirelessly to create an

“In these troubling times, it’s imperative that our employees feel that the work they do is a valuable contribution to our organization as well as the communities that we serve,” said Deborah Proctor, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health System. “We applaud our employees for their active involvement to improve patient care, maintain highly safe environments for one another and our patients, and ensure that we achieve our mission of continuing the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.”

St. Joseph has 20,000 employees in hospitals and other facilities in California, Texas and new Mexico including St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton and Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. CORRECTION: The system has proposed buying South Coast Medical Center in Laguna Beach. The state attorney general must approve the deal.

The Great Workplaces Award may anger union organizers who have targeted St. Joseph for several years. They sponsored rallies last summer and brought Attorney General Jerry Brown to town to support them.
