Business publication Fortune’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For” includes at least 16 with locations in Orange County.
Part of the selection is based on employee ratings and part on the company’s responses to a “culture audit” questionnaire. One of the key factors this year was job growth.
Among the companies with operations in Orange County and their 2008 rate of job growth are:
“No matter what happens with the economy, the demand for talent will remain,” Managing Editor Andy Serwer wrote on his blog. “Great companies know that super-motivated, happy, world-class employees are an incredible competitive advantage.”
The list was compiled from research done by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute.
Maxine Clark, founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop which has three O.C. stores, said, “From the beginning we wanted every associate to participate in making Build-a-Bear Workshop the best place to work and play.”
Fortune noted that Scottrade, with an office in Santa Ana, has never had layoffs. Founder Rodger Riney said, “Our associates’ dedication to customer service has been the foundation of our success for nearly 30 years, and their passion for what we do has made Scottrade a great place to work.”
Scottrade said it plans to hire 400 to 500 people across the country in 2009. Click here to see others on the Fortune list that say they are hiring. It might not be accurate, however. Microsoft is among them but it said Thursday it is laying off 1,400, the first layoffs in its history.
The entire package will be in Fortune’s Feb. 2 issue.

OK, which one of you companies will hire me? I’m almost 47 and have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. I have several years working in a corporate environment. I’m sick and tired of working at places that pay $12 an hour - that won’t cut it as living in the O.C. is very expensive.
The Four Seasons Hotel moved out of OC more than 4 years ago. It is now the Island Hotel and it is not the same as the Four Seasons
It is unfortunate that there are not more locations with OC weather. As my 4 year old grandhild in the cold country said to me this last Christmas, “I want to go to back to California with you gandpa,” Why, I said. “Cause its waam out there” . …..
I used to work for Nordstrom. It does not live up to its reputation. They are careless to any medical conditions you may have and demand more than what they really credit you for.
New college grads from reputable schools start out in the low $40k’s. You’re obviously lacking something particularly important Gina.
You’re right, TK9, the nearest Four Seasons now is in Beverly Hills.
I took it off the list.
Thanks,
Jan Norman

great
“Build a bear” does not live up to the hype. It is a living hell. Satan is the CEO.
Cisco (Linksys) has offices in Irvine.
Those companies do seem like they would be great to work for however, none of them stand close to how great it would be to work for Google in Irvine. They have an employee cafeteria, basketball courts, and lounge chairs if you have a laptop.
Gina see a career counselor or coach, they can tell you what you’re doing wrong
re: Google,
you forgot lap pool and helipad.
