The 2008 list of North America’s fastest growing technology companies includes 24 Orange County companies, accounting giant Deloitte LLP announces.

In addition, Synoptek, a Santa Ana IT management company, has been named one of Deloitte’s three “Rising Stars” in North America. Synoptek’s revenue growth was 1,657% from 2005 through 2007.

The North America Tech Fast 500 was founded in 1995 by Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications Group.

Top company on the 2008 list is Hughes Communications Inc., a Germantown, MD, provider of broadband networks and services, with revenue growth of 138,762% from 2003 through 2007.

Highest ranking O.C. company is ISTA Pharmaceuticals, in the 12 spot, based on five-year growth of 21,075%.

Orange County Fast 500 winners made up almost 5% of the 2008 Fast 500, with software companies, medical equipment providers and communications/networking companies contributing the most companies to the list.

“Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 recognizes technology companies who have achieved extraordinary growth in North America’s most innovative and competitive sectors,” said Phil Asmundson, Deloitte LLP vice chairman and national managing partner for Technology, Media and Telecommunications.

“Now more than ever, fast growth companies of all sizes are a bright spot not to be overlooked,” added Mark Jensen, national managing partner of Deloitte LLP’s Venture Capital Services. “Historically, it is the fastest growing businesses that spur innovation, job creation and economic growth in general.”

The overall average growth of the Fast 500 companies was 3,043%, the highest since 2004 when Google topped the list, and up from 1,823% in 2007.

As an accompaniment to the Fast 500, Deloitte also recognizes 10 “Rising Star” companies. Eligibility for “Rising Star” companies is the same as for Fast 500 companies, except that they must have been in business a minimum of three years but less than five years; they are selected based on percentage revenue growth over three years, from fiscal years 2005-2007.
