St. Joseph Health System in Orange is one of 20 recipients of the Gallup global 2008 Great Workplace Award.
It is the second straight year that St. Joseph has received the award. The company has 19,000 employees, 14 hospitals, three home health agencies and multiple physician groups in California, Texas and New Mexico.
The Gallup Great Workplace Award was created to recognize companies for extraordinary ability to create an engaged workplace culture. The winners understand that employee engagement is a force that drives real business outcomes, said Tom Rath, who leads Gallup’s workplace and leadership consulting practice.
“Studying more than 10 million employees worldwide allowed us to set an extraordinarily high bar for this award,” Rath said. “The winners have gone far beyond just offering nice perks and benefits. They have created an environment that truly engages people every day, throughout the organization.”
The other winning companies are:
Among the factors considered in the selections were the companies’ ability to link employee engagement to business outcomes, a strategic plan that highlights building employee involvement within the organization and examples of tools and strategies that increase employee involvement.

Anyone want to make a bet that the salariies at this supposedly best place to work can’t qualify one to become a homeowner in O.C.???
you company is one of the best places to work for.
A few of they are in Michigan, in fact, two are in Kalamazoo. Many are healthcare related. I don’t understand the significant of these “awards.”
Salary maybe low, but houses in Kalamazoo and Michigan are real bargains compare to a few years ago.
The study ranks “best places to work”, not “Places most likely to make you rich and able to indulge all your secret fantasies.” Get real already. I spent five years with the St. Joseph system in OC, and I have never worked in a better envirionment, with finer people nor enjoyed my work experience more. If you’re there, you came to be part of a healthcare enterprise, and the slogan “Everything for Life” means what it says. If you’re cut out for a greed-oriented career and lifestyle you’re not gonna be happy anywhere anyway, so for god’s sake don’t go into a field where helping others, saving lives and reducing suffering is the goal. Become a day-trader or, well, no, I wouldn’t go into real estate right now.
Best work experience I’ve ever had. The ranking totally meets the survey’s standards. Sorry it doesn’t cut it with the money-obsessed.
The Gallap Great Workplace logo is really grainy.
The link just opens another window with just the logo. Would expect the link to go the full results of the study.
awesome this will be a blow to the union….just watch though OC Weekly
will put out a story making fun of the award and trying to discredit it
I work in the same building as these people. they are the rudest people in the world. Doesnt seem like they are really working in a “great workplace” because of their attitudes
If SJHS is such a great place to work, then why are employees trying to unionize?
Message to “My company is not on the list”:
I put the link to Gallup’s Great Workplace Award on the words “2008 Great Workplace Award” in the first sentence. Just click on that and it will take you to the site.
Hope that helps,
Jan Norman
Ha cool.
Being from New Zealand it is good to see Auckland Savings Bank on the list. Brings back a few memories of my childhood. I won an English essay contest sponsored by ASB when I was 11- or 12 at King’s prep school. It was a cash prize as far as I remember. Seemed like a lot when I was a kid.

“PBateman Says: If SJHS is such a great place to work, then why are employees trying to unionize?”
One might wonder if the majority of the employees there do in fact want to unionize. We do know that the SEIU, Jesse Jackson, and Moonbeam certainly want them to unionize. No huge surprise there since the SEIU’s Ppolitical Action Committee supports both of these individuals, and other leftist candidates for office.
As soon as 30% of the union employees sign to authorize a certification election, and 50%+1 vote by secret ballot (so that there is no union or employer coercion), then we will know that the workers there want to unionize.
