Tip of the Day: Build search engine success

February 2nd, 2008, 1:00 am · Post a Comment · posted by Jan Norman, small-business columnist

Today’s tip comes from Matt McGee who runs the Small Business SEM Web site.

pyramid.jpgMention search engine optimization to many business owners and their eyes glaze over. McGee knows his stuff and is willing to share details about how to succeed online specifically for the small-business owner who doesn’t have an IT department and a million-dollar  budget.

An admirer of UCLA’s John Wooden and his Success Pyramid, McGee has developed his own SEO Success Pyramid.

You must start with a foundation of commitment, planning, product or service, education and patience in order to build “buzz” for your Web site. The ultimate goal is trust, which is the #1 factor in building a powerful and popular domain.

Other building blocks in McGee’s pyramid include:

  • Keyword Research: If you target the wrong keywords, you’re doomed to fail. You’ve heard that a million times, I hope. More than that, you also need to know what to do with your keywords.
  • Analytics: How will you know you’re successful if you have no way of measuring what you’ve done? Measure, analyze, adjust strategies and tactics as needed.
  • Crawlability: A search engine cannot index pages that its spider cannot crawl. Be careful with the Flash movies, the complicated DHTML and javascript, the robots.txt file, etc.
